Injections must be performed by a qualified nurse using sterile equipment and proper medical technique.

Main Types of Injections

There are several main types of injections:

  1. Intravenous Injection (IV) — injection into a vein
  2. Intramuscular Injection (IM) — injection into a muscle
  3. Subcutaneous Injection (SC) — injection under the skin
  4. Intradermal Injection (ID) — injection into the upper layer of the skin

The type of injection is determined by the doctor, depending on the medication, the patient’s condition, and the purpose of treatment.

Intravenous Injection

An intravenous injection is administered directly into a vein.

This method is used when medication needs to enter the bloodstream quickly or when prescribed by a doctor for a specific medical purpose.

Intravenous injections must be performed only by qualified medical personnel.

Intramuscular Injection

An intramuscular injection is administered into the muscle.

This method is commonly used for medications that need to be absorbed through muscle tissue.

The nurse selects the appropriate injection site and performs the procedure according to medical standards and the doctor’s prescription.

Subcutaneous Injection

A subcutaneous injection is administered into the fatty layer under the skin.

This type of injection is often used for:

  • Insulin
  • Certain vaccines
  • Medications that need to be absorbed slowly

The needle is usually inserted at a 45° or 90° angle, depending on the patient’s subcutaneous fat layer and the type of medication.

Absorption is usually slower than with intramuscular injection.

Intradermal Injection

An intradermal injection is administered into the upper layer of the skin, called the dermis.

This method is often used for:

  • Allergy testing
  • Certain diagnostic procedures
  • Some specific vaccines, when prescribed

The needle is inserted very superficially, usually at a 5–15° angle.

Pre-Filled Syringe

A pre-filled syringe is a syringe that is already filled with medication.

Even when a pre-filled syringe is used, the injection should be administered by a qualified nurse according to the doctor’s prescription.
