A gas-relief enema, also known as a siphon enema, water enema, or cleansing enema, is used to stimulate bowel movement and help release accumulated gas from the intestines.

This procedure is generally not painful, although it may be uncomfortable for the patient. It is most often used when a person experiences excessive gas buildup, bloating, constipation, or intestinal spasms.

What Does a Gas-Relief Enema Do?

A gas-relief enema may help to:

  • Promote the faster release of gas from the large intestine
  • Reduce bloating, pain, and discomfort
  • Gently stimulate intestinal peristalsis
  • Support bowel preparation before certain medical examinations, such as colonoscopy, when recommended by a doctor

How Is the Procedure Performed?

During a water enema procedure:

  1. The patient lies on their side with the knees slightly bent toward the abdomen.
  2. Warm water is used, usually 500–1500 ml, depending on the doctor’s recommendation.
  3. A soft enema tip is lubricated and carefully inserted into the rectum.
  4. The water is slowly introduced into the intestine.
  5. The procedure helps stimulate the release of gas and bowel contents.
  6. The procedure usually takes about 10–15 minutes.
  7. After the procedure, the patient releases the fluid and accumulated gas.

Possible Risks

If performed incorrectly, the procedure may cause:

  • Irritation of the rectum or anus
  • Spasms or pain
  • Rarely, injury to the rectal area
  • Disruption of normal bowel function if used too frequently

Frequent use is not recommended unless advised by a doctor.

When Should This Procedure Not Be Used?

A gas-relief enema should not be performed in the following cases:

  • Acute intestinal inflammation or bloody diarrhea
  • Suspected or confirmed intestinal obstruction
  • Severe hemorrhoids or anal fissures
  • Severe abdominal pain of unknown cause

Important Notice

A gas-relief enema should be performed carefully and preferably by qualified medical personnel, especially in elderly, weakened, post-operative, or chronically ill patients.
